How MOJOE and Marex joined forces to hire elite female athletes for their trading floor

What do an Olympic finalist, an England netballer, an England U21 hockey player and a junior LTA tennis player all have in common?

They all work on a trading floor in London.

Ama Pipi, Rheanna Thomas-Grant, Maddie Long and Eliza Wheeler are the first cohort of our partnership with Marex. Four elite athletes, one trading floor, and a partnership now moving into its second year.

The introduction

Elite athletes spend years performing under pressure, being coached, handling setbacks and being measured on results every single day. Then their sporting career ends, often suddenly. A trading floor is one of the few places where those habits matter from day one. That’s the idea we set out to prove with Marex.

Marex is a global financial services platform. It gives clients access to markets, the infrastructure to trade, and liquidity across commodity and financial markets.

Founded in 2005, it has grown into a business of more than 3,000 people across over 50 offices in Europe, the Americas and Asia, with access to more than 60 exchanges worldwide. It is headquartered in the City of London and has been listed on the Nasdaq (MRX) since April 2024.

Its work spans four areas: clearing, agency and execution, market making, and hedging and investment solutions. It covers energy, metals, agriculture, environmental products and capital markets, and holds leading positions in many of the world’s major metals, energy and agricultural products.

It’s a business that knows sport too. In 2026, Marex became front-of-shirt partner to Nottingham Forest. And it backs new talent. Its trainee programme and bootcamp bring people into the business early and build them up on the floor, which is exactly where our athletes now sit.

The problem

Across the financial markets industry, women are still underrepresented on trading floors. Marex runs a highly successful graduate programme, and like many firms it wants to bring more women into the business and see them thrive.

At the same time, one of the strongest talent pools in the country is going largely unseen. Many elite sportswomen combine sport with work or study because they have to. Contracts are short, pay is often precarious, and when sport ends, the qualities they’ve built over years rarely show up on a CV in a way employers recognise.

The opportunity was to connect the two. That meant a new talent profile alongside Marex’s existing intake, rather than a replacement for it.

The brief

Marex asked us to find elite sportswomen with the temperament for a trading floor and bring them into its 2026 intake, alongside its graduate hires.

That meant a few things:

  • The right people, not the most people. Sportswomen from any sport who could handle pressure, take feedback and keep improving, and who had the emotional intelligence, ability and adaptability to grow into roles across the business.
  • Proper preparation. Every candidate needed to understand Marex, the markets it works in and the roles on offer, and to be able to explain how their time in sport translates to the desk.
  • A real look inside. An open day at Marex HQ, so athletes could see the floor, meet the team and decide whether it was for them before going any further.
  • A process that works with Marex’s own. Candidates were shortlisted and prepared by us, then went through Marex’s hiring process, with Marex making the final decisions.
  • Support beyond the offer. Help to settle in through the bootcamp and the first months in role, so each hire had the best chance of thriving and staying.

What we did

  • Sourcing across every sport. We opened the opportunity to elite female athletes through our network, partners and talent pool.
  • Ideated and brought to life an open day at Marex HQ. 25 athletes came through the doors to see the floor, meet the team and understand the work.
  • Preparation before introduction. Through MOJOE's structured Career Readiness Programme, each athlete got an industry briefing, help translating their sporting experience into the language of the desk, and interview preparation built around what Marex looks for.
  • Hiring alongside Marex. We supported the interview process with the Marex team. The hiring decisions were theirs.
  • Support after the offer. Each hire has a senior mentor inside Marex, and we stay close through the bootcamp and their first months in role.

The results

  • 4 hired onto the trainee programme
  • 1 senior mentor inside Marex for the cohort

All four are in role across Energy, Finance and the Chief Operating Office, and internal feedback has been very positive. The clearest result is the next one: Marex has committed to a second cohort for 2027.

What Marex said

There are strong parallels between the high-performance environments of professional sport and the trading floor. Athletes are accustomed to performing under pressure, working collaboratively and demonstrating the resilience, discipline and ambition needed to succeed - all qualities we value highly at Marex. It has been incredibly rewarding to see our current cohort make the transition from professional sport into our industry, applying their skills in a new environment and demonstrating just how successful this career pathway can be.

- Gary Pettit, Global Head of Rates Products, Marex

Working alongside Gary and Mojoe, we have created a unique pathway for professional sportswomen into the world of broking. Recognising their transferable skills, identifying where they can best contribute to our business and providing the support they need to thrive reflects Marex’s forward-thinking approach to identifying and nurturing talent. We have been particularly impressed by how quickly our first cohort have adapted to their new careers.

- Elizabeth Cannons, Capital Markets Business Manager, Marex

What the athletes said

Ama Pipi, one of the four athletes to join Marex
“I’d never thought about a career in finance until the open day at Marex. Seeing the floor opened my eyes to how big and exciting the opportunity was, and the MOJOE and Marex teams helped me understand how the skills and traits I built on the track fit this world. Every day is a learning curve, and I love being outside my comfort zone because I’m growing every single day. I can’t thank the MOJOE team enough for their support throughout the process.”

- Ama Pipi, Former GB International 400m Runner

Eliza Wheeler joined Marex's energy team as a sales & trading graduate
"Sport has played a huge part in my life, so I’m really grateful to MOJOE and Marex for recognising that the skills you develop through sport don’t go to waste once you stop competing. They can be just as valuable when you move into a career. Playing junior GB tennis and Premier League hockey taught me discipline, resilience and how to handle pressure, and I’ve already seen how those qualities can help in a fast-paced environment like broking. MOJOE really helped me see how my sporting background could translate into a career, and I’ve loved the experience of joining Marex and learning something completely new. There’s still a lot to learn, but I enjoy the challenge and think sport has given me the mindset to keep learning, deal with setbacks and always try to improve.

- Eliza Wheeler, Former junior LTA tennis player & Premier League hockey player

What’s next: the 2027 intake

Recruitment for cohort two is now under way. We’re looking for elite female athletes and sports professionals with the drive and temperament for a career on the floor.

  • Two experience days at Marex in early 2027.
  • Preparation from us for every athlete who receives an offer, before they start.
  • Graduate bootcamp in September 2027, then ongoing support from us and Marex.

We work with current and former elite athletes across every sport. Marex is one of a growing number of employers backing that talent.
